Head on this pilgrimage through central Italy and see the history and faith of a wonderful area of Italy. This tour will take you from Perugia to Norcia where you will see some beautiful sites along the way. First is Assisi, where you can see St Francis’s basilica before heading to Cascia.
Cascia was home to Saint Rita, an Italian widow who after the murder of her husband became an Augustinian nun. She was most renowned for practicing the mortification of the flesh, a practice that through fasting, abstinence or pious kneeling, leads to the put to death their sinful nature. She is often shown with a bleeding wound on her forehead, which is to show a partial stigmata. Whilst married to her abusive husband she made efforts to convert him for 17 years until he died. She was canonized in the 1900 and became known as the patroness of abused wives and heartbroken women.
In Cascia you will get the chance to visit her monastery and have a private mass in Basilica di Santa Rita Da Cascia in Cappellina.
Roccaporena was the birth place of Saint Rita in 1381 and is believed to be place where she came to pray. It maintains the history of Saint Rita from when she was young girl until she was a widow. The famous “Rock of Prayer” is also situated in Roccaporena and is where Saint Rita travelled to pray. It is now a symbol of her spirituality, that despite her hardships she went on to produce something good.
